Gotemba Premium Outlets

Gotemba Premium Outlets is a large open-air outlet mall in Gotemba, on the Shizuoka side of Mount Fuji, and its operator describes it as set on an extensive site within view of the mountain. It is popular with visitors combining shopping with a Fuji or Hakone itinerary, since on a clear day Mount Fuji rises behind the shops.
The Fuji view from the outlets
Because the mall is laid out in the open air on a wide site facing the mountain, Mount Fuji is visible from parts of the complex on a clear day, which few shopping destinations can offer. As at any Fuji viewpoint, cloud often hides it, so treat the view as a bonus rather than a reason to go.
What is there
The mall opened on 13 July 2000 and is run by Mitsubishi Estate Simon. It was extended in July 2003 and again in March 2008, and the operator now lists about 290 outlet stores, making it a full day's shopping rather than a quick stop.

The outlets are reachable without a car or a tour.
- By expressway bus — direct services run from Shinjuku, Tokyo, Shinagawa and Ikebukuro stations, and from Yokohama
- By train — take the JR Gotemba Line to Gotemba Station, then the free shuttle bus to the outlets
- By car — the Gotemba Interchange on the Tōmei Expressway is the nearest exit, and National Route 138 links the outlets with Hakone and the Fuji lakes
- By local bus — routes run to Lake Kawaguchi, Mishima Station and the Hakone area
Fitting it into a Fuji or Hakone day
Local buses and Route 138 connect the outlets with both Hakone and the Fuji lakes, which is why the mall suits a day that already takes in one of them. Of the tours on this site, the private full-day tour includes a stop at Gotemba Premium Outlets; the Mount Fuji and Hakone group tour does not.
